From 1981 until 2011, the Space Shuttle program was the fourth human spaceflight program carried out by the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), completing regular transportation for Earth-to-orbit crew and cargo. The official name, Space Transportation System (STS), was derived from a 1969 concept for a reusable spacecraft system, of which it was the sole component funded for development. It conducted 135 flights and transported 355 astronauts from 16 nations, many of whom returned many times.
