Reimagination of a classic visual masterpiece

The presented piece is the official key art for The Invincible video game. Inspired by the legendary "The Invincible" book cover from the 1973 English edition published by Sidgwick & Jackson, this key art pays homage to the hard sci-fi classic and its visual interpretation.

This key art was developed by Starward Industries. To complete the visual identity, a special font was developed to complement the image’s retro-future look and feel. The game studio Starward Industries is using this image across all video game storefronts as well as promotional materials.

A story retold in a modern medium

The Invincible is a video game reimagination of the epitome sci-fi book of the same name by Stanislaw Lem. Published in 1964, The Invincible became an instant classic, selling millions of copies worldwide. The Invincible video game takes Lem’s work and aims to bring it to a whole new audience in a different medium, but still maintaining the core of what the original book is about.

The Invincible by Starward Industries is a first-person Sci-Fi thriller that’s set in a retro-future timeline. Waking up on a hostile planet, you embark on a mysterious mission to find the missing crew of your spaceship. Whilst trying to survive, you’ll discover that Regis III holds terrifying secrets which are uncovered while you’re piecing together the fate of your crew. And as you delve deeper into the mystery, you realise that perhaps you are not alone, and that some places like this planet are better left untouched. But it’s too late to turn back.

The game will be coming to both PC and consoles. See more details on a dedicated Steam page.

The Book

Stanislaw Lem’s The Invincible is by many considered one of the greatest sci-fi novels ever written. First appearing in Poland in 1964, the book and the author soon reached global cult status. This literary work touches on such forward-thinking ideas such as the evolution of artificial intelligence in a similar pattern to biological beings, the place of humankind within the universe, and on what constitutes life itself.

The book was praised for not just the hard science, but by the ability to paint vivid images within the reader’s mind. It has since sold millions of copies worldwide, as well as being translated into over 40 languages.

The Team

Starward Industries is a Polish video games studio located in Krakow. It’s a collective of former AAA video game developers. In the past, they have worked on such global hits like Witcher 3, Dying Light, Dead Island, Cyberpunk 2077, and loads more. With some members having more than a decade of video game development experience, they decided to open a studio of their own. And their dream project? Bringing The Invincible to a whole new medium.

The authors of the piece are leading graphic designers from Starward Industries: Wojtek Ostrycharz (Art Director), Sebastian Spłuszka (Environment Artist), and Piotr Mierzwa (Hardsurface Artist).
