Also known as NGC 7293 or Caldwell 63, the Helix Nebula is a captivating planetary nebula located in the constellation Aquarius. Discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding, probably before 1824, it is one of the closest bright planetary nebulae to Earth, situated just 655 light-years away.
Similar in appearance to other famous nebulae like the Cat's Eye, Ring, and Dumbbell Nebulae, the Helix Nebula stands out due to its relative proximity and distinctive appearance when viewed from an equatorial angle. Often referred to as the “Eye of God” in pop culture and occasionally as the “Eye of Sauron,” this celestial wonder captures the imagination.
