Lionel Majzik: Eta Carinae Poster – The Majesty of a Hypergiant Star
Journey into the Heart of the Universe
Bring the awe-inspiring wonders of the cosmos into your home with the Lionel Majzik: Eta Carinae Poster. This stunning artwork captures the brilliance of one of the universe’s most fascinating hypergiant stars, inviting you to explore the depths and mysteries of space.
The Celestial Titan: Eta Carinae Revealed
At a staggering distance of 7,500 light-years from Earth, Eta Carinae is an exceptionally bright star, boasting a mass between 100 and 150 times that of our Sun and a luminosity nearly 4 million times greater.
Nestled within the Carina constellation, this celestial giant plays a pivotal role in illuminating the nebula named after it. Its intense ultraviolet radiation and tremendous stellar winds—blowing a Jupiter-sized amount of material off its surface each year—create a gorgeous tapestry of gas and dust, rich in color and structure.
Moreover, Eta Carinae is notorious for its dramatic outbursts as it occasionally stages a dress rehearsal of its own demise, radiating energy comparable to that of a supernova and ejecting material equivalent to 10-12 Suns.
The Art of Capturing Cosmic Detail
Given the challenging weather conditions that often impede observation, Lionel Majzik opted for an "online tour" using the powerful 61 cm PlaneWave CDK24 telescope in Chile, enabling him to capture Eta Carinae’s stunning environment from January 14 to February 1, 2021.
Over five nights, he collected nearly 2.5 hours of RGB and narrowband data, combining traditional RGB imaging with narrowband techniques for a uniquely refined aesthetic.
By merging filter data with near-equal exposure times, Majzik created a beautiful and subtle color palette that showcases the intricate details of this stellar environment.
