Explore the breathtaking beauty of the Orion Nebula and Trapezium Cluster captured by the NIRCam instrument aboard the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope.
This remarkable long-wavelength color composite image provides an unparalleled view of the gas, dust, and molecules in this iconic star-forming region with incredible sensitivity in the thermal infrared.
Unveiling the Orion Nebula's Secrets
In this detailed survey of the inner Orion Nebula, the cavity is rich with ionized gas, vividly displayed in purple hues, while the surrounding areas showcase a diverse mix of dust and molecular gas in captivating reds, browns, and greens.
The Bright Bay to the upper left of the image reveals the erosion caused by massive stars at the center of the region, with numerous pillars of gas and dust being intricately sculpted.
A Glimpse into Star Formation
This young star-forming region, just a million years old, teems with thousands of new stars spanning a vast range of masses—from those 40 times the mass of our Sun to those less than 0.1 times as massive.
The most massive and hottest stars, prominently the Trapezium stars at the center, have dramatically carved a cavity in the giant molecular cloud from which they were born, a feature clearly visible in this astonishing image.
Orion Nebula: An Astronomical Marvel
Located approximately 1300 light-years from Earth in the 'sword' of the constellation Orion, the image covers a region that is an impressive 4 by 2.75 light-years in size.
As you gaze upon the wispy purple, green, and red nebulosity, with thousands of stars sprinkled across the field, you experience an immersive view into one of the Universe’s most fascinating phenomena.
Image Description
This mesmerizing image of the Orion Nebula features a young star-forming region filled with an array of vibrant colors. The central region is dominated by purple ionized gas, surrounded by browns, greens, and reds.
The periphery glows bright green and darker brown to the left, with an intricate spray of yellow, orange, red, and purple towards the top center.
Thousands of stars are sprinkled across the field, with the brightest sources exhibiting distinctive diffraction spikes characteristic of the James Webb Space Telescope.
