Witness Cosmic Transformation with Chris Willocks' The Vela Supernova Remnant Poster
Embark on a journey through the universe's dynamic life cycle with Chris Willocks' "The Vela Supernova Remnant Poster." This mesmerizing bi-color narrowband image elegantly captures the magnificent aftermath of a massive star's explosive demise.
Situated approximately 800 light-years away in the constellation Vela, this remnant is a true spectacle of cosmic chaos and beauty, narrating the story of a Type II supernova that erupted around 11,000 years ago.
The vivid hues in this image arise from ionized hydrogen and oxygen gases, ignited by the supernova's shockwaves as they expanded throughout the interstellar medium.
These intricately woven filaments of gas reveal the complex structures left in the wake of stellar death, weaving a narrative of destruction, endurance, and rebirth.
At this celestial tapestry's heart lies the Vela Pulsar, the dense stellar core, rhythmically emitting radiation pulses, making it a beacon amidst cosmic debris.
A Gateway for Cosmic Exploration
One of the closest supernova remnants to Earth, the Vela Supernova Remnant invites astrophysicists and stargazers alike to explore and ponder the long-term cosmic consequences of such stellar phenomena.
This captivating image not only showcases the chaotic beauty of stellar death but also the ongoing transformation of the universe, reflecting its power to endlessly renew and evolve.

Chris is an English astrophotographer whose cosmic passion began at an early age. At about 13, he bought his first telescope, sparking a lifelong obsession with astrophotography. He earned a degree in Astrophysics from Keele University, frequently spending nights in the university observatory. When weather permits, he captures images from his home observatory in rural Shropshire and uses remote telescopes in places like Chile and Australia.
Chris has received numerous accolades, including NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD), Amateur Astronomy Picture of the Day (AAPOD), and several Astrobin Top Picks. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS). Outside astronomy, Chris is passionate about golf and aviation, working day-to-day as a cargo pilot. He also enjoys electronic music and runs a small business producing modular synthesizers.
