The Journey Behind the Image
Stefan's ambitious project was undertaken in 2022 while operating three observatories in Namibia. With guests present, he opted for minimal automation, employing manual techniques for star alignment and coordination adjustments.
This hands-on approach allowed him to connect more intimately with his work, despite the challenges posed by temperature fluctuations and tilt issues at wide apertures.
Sometimes I like to do my photos by using minimal automation, even often without plate-solving. Make a table, go by star alignment, and use the handbox to change coordinates, the old way, with an ancient FS2 control and it is great. It took almost 2 weeks to just capture this picture - Stefan Lenz
Technical Insights:
-
Equipment Used:
- Sigma Art 135mm lens at f/2.2
- ZWO ASI 6200mm camera
-
Post-Processing Challenges:
- Managing large file sizes with Adobe software - it has ancient limits to file sizes and I still had to learn how to deal with this data
- Incorporating supernova remnants like RCW 114 into the final image
The result is a stunning portrayal of the Milky Way's center, showcasing vibrant colors and intricate details that are often overlooked.
I was alone for 6 days before the first guests arrived in Namibia, all alone hundreds of meters away from the farm in the Kalahari desert. 3 platforms just for me with 3 projects, the right one for this monster photo - Stefan Lenz
