Stefan Lenz is a PhD physicist who has conducted research at CERN and Jülich, and is also a professional photographer and astrophotographer. With a lifelong fascination for stars and astrophysics, he enjoys sharing his knowledge with children and teenagers, as well as capturing the beauty of the universe through his photography. Lenz has traveled to various locations, such as Namibia, Colorado, and the Canary Islands, to collect light for his art. He is particularly drawn to the darkest places on Earth and believes in the importance of observing the night sky with the naked eye.

Stefan Lenz: The Blue Horsehead Nebula Poster

Discover the enchanting beauty of the Blue Horsehead Nebula (IC 4592), a stunning reflection nebula nestled in the constellation Scorpius. This captivating celestial object is not only a feast for the eyes but also a testament to the wonders of astrophotography.

The Blue Horsehead Nebula may be one of my most photographed deep sky objects of mine and IT IS, still, really one of my favorites. Photos like this keep me struggling to get better in everything so that in the end I honor the light that comes to me and my sensors to shape this beautiful entity of creation...- Stefan Lenz

Overview of the Blue Horsehead Nebula

The Blue Horsehead Nebula is a photogenic reflection nebula that spans approximately 3 degrees by 1.5 degrees in the night sky. It is illuminated by the nearby star Nu Scorpii, which creates a mesmerizing blue hue resembling a horse's head, giving this nebula its distinctive name.

Located about 420 light-years from Earth, it is best observed during summer, specifically from late May to early August.

    • Cataloged: IC 4592
    • Common Name: The Blue Horsehead Nebula
    • Constellation: Scorpius
    • Object Type: Reflection Nebula
    • Distance: 420 light-years away
    • Best Time to See It: Late-May – Early-August

    The Science Behind Reflection Nebulae

Reflection nebulae like IC 4592 are composed of fine dust particles that scatter and reflect light from nearby stars. Unlike emission nebulae, which emit their light, reflection nebulae appear dark in space until illuminated by the light of energetic stars.

The result is a breathtaking display of color and form, making them prime targets for astrophotographers.

    Unique Features:

    • The nebula is part of the larger Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, which contains a wealth of other celestial objects.
    • Despite its beauty, IC 4592 is often overshadowed by its more colorful neighbor, making it a hidden gem for those who seek it out.

    Astrophotography Insights

Capturing the essence of the Blue Horsehead Nebula requires skill and patience. Long-exposure techniques are essential to bring out the intricate details and vibrant colors hidden within this cosmic wonder. Stefan Lenz's approach combines advanced equipment and meticulous processing to achieve stunning results.

I remember a lot of frustrating days being a beginner, not being satisfied with the results. But feeling like a pioneer, just on my own, feeling a growing bonding in this struggle to “get better”, did it's job so now is an undividable part of me, like the Blue Horsehead Nebula - Stefan Lenz

I remember sleeping a bit up in the observatory listening to the sounds of the machines, seeing the Milky Way above, lying on 2 folding chairs under my sleeping bag. I remember going to sleep after 3 a.m. using a podcast to fall asleep faster and waking up around 5 to close the observatory before dawn... - Stefan Lenz

So I started the Blue Horsehead with my two kids in Namibia, several nights with more than 5 lenses and telescopes, years ago. It is strange for some people to look through pics and spend less than a few seconds, if at all, looking at them. Words cannot express the hundreds and hundreds of hours that led to it. - Stefan Lenz
