The Moon probably formed about 4.5 billion years ago when a Mars-sized object impacted the Earth. The Moon is tidally locked to the Earth, so the near side always faces the Earth.

THE SURFACE OF THE MOON: The near and far sides of the moon are dramatically different, featuring dark plains and maria on the near side and highlands on the far side.
