By comparing images taken a year apart, astronomers identified 79 supernovae in a patch of sky no larger than a grain of rice held at arm’s length. That’s ten times more early-universe supernovae than were previously known, including the most distant ever confirmed—an explosion from when the universe was just 1.8 billion years old.

These supernovae are cosmic milestones. Their light, stretched by the expansion of the universe, reveals how the cosmos grew and evolved.
