Marzena Rogozińska – a psychologist and educator by profession, has been engaged in astrophotography since 2020, combining science, art, and travel. She has photographed, among others, the Milky Way in Europe and Hawaii, the aurora borealis in Norway and Iceland, a total solar eclipse in the USA, and southern sky objects in Namibia.

She develops projects, publishes her photographs in astronomical magazines, and conducts workshops and lectures. Her work has been distinguished twice within NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) project (2021 and 2025).

Marzena Rogozińska: Aurora over Búðakirkja Church -When Heaven Dances Above Sacred Ground

Some moments in nature are so powerful they stop you in your tracks. When the aurora borealis sweeps across the Icelandic sky above Búðakirkja's stark black silhouette, you're witnessing one of Earth's most electrifying collaborations between light, history, and raw wilderness.

Polish astrophotographer Marzena Rogozińska has already captured NASA's attention twice. Her work doesn't just document the cosmos—it tells stories that bridge the gap between our earthbound existence and the infinite universe above. This stunning capture from October 2024 is no exception.

Location Context: Where Earth Meets Cosmos

Búðakirkja sits in isolation on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula's southern edge, surrounded by the ancient Búðahraun lava fields. Built in 1848 by the determined Steinunn Sveinsdóttir—who obtained royal permission after local clergy refused her request—the church bears a defiant inscription: "This church was built in 1848 without the support of clergy".

The site's remoteness from light pollution, combined with October's lengthening nights and exceptional atmospheric transparency, creates ideal conditions for aurora observation. That thin layer of October snow Rogozińska encountered? It amplified the auroral glow, enhancing the scene's overall luminance and adding another layer of natural magic.

    The Image That Speaks Volumes

Against the volcanic expanse of Búðahraun lava field on Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Búðakirkja—the iconic black church—stands sentinel beneath waving ribbons of emerald aurora. The composition is masterfully executed: the auroral arc draws your eye directly to the 1848 Danish-designed structure, creating spatial harmony between cultural heritage and celestial wonder.

Rogozińska employed a sophisticated double exposure technique during that freezing October night—capturing the aurora's swift dance in 5 seconds while giving the foreground and church structure a full 30 seconds to reveal their details. Working through sub-zero temperatures and punishing winds on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, she preserved both the sharpness of the moving lights and the atmospheric depth of the scene.

    • For Space Enthusiasts: The aurora borealis represents one of nature's most mesmerizing phenomena—solar particles colliding with Earth's atmosphere to create ethereal light shows. This print captures that magic in museum-quality detail.
    • For Interior Designers: The dramatic contrast between the pitch-black church and luminous green aurora creates instant visual impact. The composition's depth and balanced negative space work beautifully in modern, minimalist, or Nordic-inspired interiors.
