Stefan Lenz is a PhD physicist who has conducted research at CERN and Jülich, and is also a professional photographer and astrophotographer. With a lifelong fascination for stars and astrophysics, he enjoys sharing his knowledge with children and teenagers, as well as capturing the beauty of the universe through his photography. Lenz has traveled to various locations, such as Namibia, Colorado, and the Canary Islands, to collect light for his art. He is particularly drawn to the darkest places on Earth and believes in the importance of observing the night sky with the naked eye.

Stefan Lenz: The Running Chicken Nebula

Embark on a cosmic journey with Stefan Lenz's "The Running Chicken Nebula," a stunning astrophotographic masterpiece that captures the intricate beauty of this fascinating nebula.

Over the course of two years, Stefan dedicated 10 hours of exposure using SHO LRGB techniques, employing advanced equipment in the pristine skies of Namibia.

Overview of the Running Chicken Nebula

The Running Chicken Nebula (IC 2944), also known as the Lambda Centauri Nebula, is an open cluster with an associated emission nebula located in the constellation Centaurus, approximately 6,500 light-years from Earth. Its unique shape resembles a running chicken, which has captivated both astronomers and stargazers alike.

    Key Features:

    • Bok Globules: The nebula is home to several Bok globules—dark clouds of gas and dust that serve as potential sites for star formation. These globules appear to float like embryos in space, embodying the essence of cosmic creation.
    • Vibrant Colors: The nebula features a rich tapestry of colors, primarily due to the emission from ionized gases surrounding young stars. Stefan’s use of narrowband filters allows for a detailed representation of these colors while preserving their natural beauty.

    Technical Details:

    • Cataloged: IC 2944
    • Location: Constellation Centaurus
    • Object Type: Open Cluster with Associated Emission Nebula
    • Distance: 6,500 light-years away
    • Exposure Time: 10 hours in SHO LRGB
    • Equipment Used:
      • Skywatcher Esprit 120 & 100 telescopes
      • ZWO ASI 6200mm camera
      • Antlia Pro 3nm narrowband filters
      • ioptron HAE43ec mount
      • Nikon D810A
      • Sigma Art 135mm lens

    The Artistic Journey

Stefan's artistic process is as much about personal experience as it is about technical skill.

Sometimes I get tired of seeing “false color” Hubble pallette pics, then sometimes I really love them. For this is no either-or. Viewing and liking for me is a matter of taste,  not a matter of science - Stefan Lenz

His approach combines traditional methods with modern technology, allowing him to capture stunning details while preserving the nebula's natural colors.

    Capturing the Essence

Stefan’s experience in Namibia was transformative, requiring resilience through sleepless nights and challenging conditions. Each image he captures is not just a photograph but a testament to his journey—one filled with learning, suffering, and profound connections to the universe.

The most important part I think, is this timeless, spiritual bond. And without these ten thousand kilometers of travelling, these years of suffering and learning, freezing in the cold during so many nights, sweating during the heat of day setting up, being eaten by mosquitos or whatever creeps around, sleepless weeks and all the people you meet inbetween, what would it be like? - Stefan Lenz

    Why Choose This Artwork?

"The Running Chicken Nebula" is more than just an image; it’s a story—a reflection of Stefan’s dedication and passion for exploring the cosmos. This artwork serves as an invitation for viewers to connect with the universe on a deeper level.

I was more than once asked why I do this, make this great effort, for, in the internet there are all pics, better ones... I do this a little in the spirit of what in 1923, famed mountaineer George Mallory, said, in one of the most famous quotes of all time, when asked why he was attempting to summit Mount Everest: “Because it's there.”  Make it to your story, a part of yourself. Not the easy way is sometimes the best way! - Stefan Lenz

    Experience Cosmic Connection

By adding this stunning piece to your collection, you embrace not only the beauty of space but also the spirit of exploration and perseverance.
