Steve Leonard is a Canadian astrophotographer based in Toronto who has been capturing stunning images of the night sky since 2021. His work has been featured in notable publications such as Astronomy, Sky and Telescope, BBC Sky at Night, Astronomy Now, and the Journal of the Royal Canadian Astronomical Society.

What sets Steve apart from many astrophotographers is his dedication to imaging from urban environments, where light pollution poses significant challenges. He embraces this difficulty, pushing both his equipment and processing skills to their limits to create high-quality images. His primary focus is on deep sky imaging, particularly nebulae, and he utilizes 3 nm narrowband filters to effectively cut through the bright city lights.

With a background in engineering, physics, and invention, Steve meticulously builds and customizes his imaging rig, fully understanding the capabilities and limitations of each component. This expertise allows him to achieve expert-level results even with mid-range equipment. He also enjoys the creative side of astrophotography, where the fusion of science and artistry plays a crucial role in shaping each image.

In addition to his astrophotography pursuits, Steve supports startups in their commercialization efforts, particularly in developing their intellectual property. You can find his images also on Instagram under the handle urban.astrophotography.

Steve Leonard: Cone Nebula and Christmas Tree Cluster Poster

Experience the breathtaking beauty of the cosmos with our Cone Nebula and Christmas Tree Cluster Poster by renowned astrophotographer Steve Leonard.

This stunning piece captures the vibrant swirling nebulosity and intricate dust patterns of the Cone Nebula, making it a perfect addition to any space enthusiast and art lover's collection.

    A Visual Masterpiece

This artwork showcases a mesmerizing view of the Cone Nebula, where the colorful clouds of gas and dust resemble a genie being released from a bottle. The vastness of this celestial wonder is awe-inspiring—light takes over 60 years to traverse its expanse.

Each detail in this poster invites to explore the universe's complexities, making it not only perfect decor but also an ideal conversation starter.

    Unique Artistic Choices

Steve Leonard’s expertise shines through in this piece, as he employs creative processing techniques to bring out the beauty of narrowband imaging.

Unlike traditional images, which often use a standard color mapping (sulfur to red, hydrogen to green, and oxygen to blue), Leonard flips this approach. In his version, oxygen is represented in vibrant red, sulfur in lush green, and hydrogen in deep blue.

This unique OSH palette results in an electric and dynamic visual experience that captivates the viewer.

This image was shot from the light-polluted skies of Markham, Ontario, Canada, a suburb of Toronto. My 3 nm narrowband filters cut through the light pollution to provide crisp and detailed image data. - Steve Leonard
