Steve Leonard is a Canadian astrophotographer based in Toronto who has been capturing stunning images of the night sky since 2021. His work has been featured in notable publications such as Astronomy, Sky and Telescope, BBC Sky at Night, Astronomy Now, and the Journal of the Royal Canadian Astronomical Society.

What sets Steve apart from many astrophotographers is his dedication to imaging from urban environments, where light pollution poses significant challenges. He embraces this difficulty, pushing both his equipment and processing skills to their limits to create high-quality images. His primary focus is on deep sky imaging, particularly nebulae, and he utilizes 3 nm narrowband filters to effectively cut through the bright city lights.

With a background in engineering, physics, and invention, Steve meticulously builds and customizes his imaging rig, fully understanding the capabilities and limitations of each component. This expertise allows him to achieve expert-level results even with mid-range equipment. He also enjoys the creative side of astrophotography, where the fusion of science and artistry plays a crucial role in shaping each image.

In addition to his astrophotography pursuits, Steve supports startups in their commercialization efforts, particularly in developing their intellectual property. You can find his images also on Instagram under the handle urban.astrophotography.

    Steve Leonard: Pelican Nebula Poster

Elevate your space with the Pelican Nebula Poster by acclaimed astrophotographer Steve LeonardThis stunning artwork captures the intricate beauty of the Pelican Nebula (IC 5070), an emission nebula located approximately 1,800 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus.

Its unique shape, reminiscent of a pelican, is formed by bright ionized gas and dark interstellar dust, showcasing the dynamic process of star formation.

A Masterful Representation of Star Formation

This captivating image reveals the complex tendrils of gas and dust that are indicative of active star formation. The vibrant colors arise from ionized hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen gases illuminated by young, energetic stars nearby.

Leonard's goal was to demonstrate that even from urban locations plagued by light pollution, it is possible to capture nebulae in bold and vivid colors.

    Unique Features to Discover

If you look closely, you will see two whitish "whiskers" extending laterally from the top of a massive dust pillar in the lower right corner of the image. These "whiskers" hint at the presence of a protostar within the dust pillar—a young star in the early stage of formation that has yet to initiate nuclear fusion at its core - Steve Leonard

As this dense region collapses under gravity, it forms a rotating accretion disk and ejects material in bipolar jets. The collision of these jets with the surrounding interstellar medium creates shock waves, causing the gas to glow and forming the signature whisker-like structures visible in this image.
