April 6, 2026. During the lunar flyby, the Artemis II crew watched Earth slowly dip below the Moon’s horizon as Orion passed over the far side. For about 40 minutes, all communication with mission control went silent. No signal, no downlink — just four people further from home than any human has ever been.
In December 1968, Bill Anders photographed Earth rising over the lunar horizon from Apollo 8 and changed how humanity saw itself. This image does the same thing, only in reverse: Earth disappearing, a thin bright arc of atmosphere separating everything we know from everything we don’t.
The image keeps its original framing as captured aboard Orion. The visible grain is inherent to deep-space photography at extreme distance. We keep it as is — it’s part of what makes this real.
