April 2, 2026. A few hours after the Trans-Lunar Injection burn, Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman pointed a Nikon D5 through Orion's window and captured this. Earth, already visibly distant, nearly eclipses the Sun. Two auroras frame the planet: aurora borealis at the upper right, aurora australis at the lower left. In the lower right corner, zodiacal light appears as a faint glow scattered off interplanetary dust along the ecliptic plane.
This image retains its original framing as composed by the astronaut. No crop, no reframe. What you see is a deliberate choice made by hand, over 100,000 km from home. The visible grain is a natural result of shooting in extreme lighting conditions at high ISO aboard a spacecraft. We keep it intact. It's part of what makes this shot real.
