Does Marcin think of himself as a photographer? Maybe a little. For a while now.

But more than that, he’s someone who looks for things most people miss. Not necessarily the rarest things — just the ones we tend to overlook. Whether it’s a tiny detail on a beetle’s eye or a whole galaxy floating quietly in deep space, he sees stories in them. And once you notice them, you can’t look away.

Sometimes it’s a nebula reshaped by the gravity of a neighboring star, folding and stretching like something alive. Other times, it’s a wasp queen laying eggs in the early light, doing what she must for the next generation. There’s beauty in both. You just have to slow down enough to notice.

That’s what led Marcin to astrophotography. And later, to macro.

He started small — literally — with a kid’s telescope made of plastic, the kind called “AstroCabinet 90.” But even back then, the goal was clear: look closer, aim higher. Today, his deep-sky mosaics show distant nebulas in rich, sharp detail. You could hang them on a wall and get lost for hours.

He’s always chasing the darkest skies he can find — to see what’s really out there. But even when he’s standing under the stars, he hasn’t forgotten the world beneath his feet. The tiny ones, the overlooked ones. The beetles, the spiders, the wasps. They’re just as full of mystery.

Blue Horsehead Nebula by Marcin Hałaczkiewicz

Transform your space with this extraordinary Blue Horsehead Nebula print – where cosmic artistry meets technical mastery.

The Story Behind This Celestial Capture

Marcin Hałaczkiewicz isn't your typical wildlife photographer. While he may prefer creatures with six legs or more, this particular "mammal" – the stunning Blue Horsehead Nebula in Scorpius – captured his complete attention.

Most astrophotographers show the Blue Horsehead only as a background detail in wide views of the famous Rho Ophiuchi region.

But Marcin knew this ethereal reflection nebula deserved the spotlight. Using advanced mosaic techniques – the art of combining multiple detailed images into one comprehensive masterpiece – he revealed intricate structures that would otherwise remain hidden.

A Cosmic Surprise: When Science Meets Serendipity

During a faint streak that revealed itself as asteroid 19 Fortuna, one of the largest main-belt asteroids. This 200-kilometer-wide celestial wanderer had photobombed his composition, adding an unexpected layer of scientific wonder.

    Animated asteroid flyby

It's moments like these that Marcin treasures most about astrophotography: capturing what he didn't even know was there, turning simple surprises into gateways for discovery and curiosity.

It's an artifact that led me to the "discovery"

    About the Blue Horsehead Nebula

The Blue Horsehead Nebula (IC 4592) is a photogenic reflection nebula located 420 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. This cosmic gem gets its distinctive blue glow from fine dust particles reflecting the brilliant light of Nu Scorpii (also known as Jabbah), a complex septuple star system that illuminates the surrounding nebulae.

Unlike its famous cousin – the dark Horsehead Nebula in Orion – this celestial equine shines with ethereal blue beauty, spanning approximately 40 light-years across. The nebula's intricate wisps and flowing structures create an otherworldly landscape that has captivated astronomers and art lovers alike.
