This iconic image shows the Apollo 11 lunar module "Eagle" as it ascended from the Moon's surface to dock with the command module "Columbia". Visible below is a smooth mare area of the Moon, and above, a half-illuminated Earth hangs over the horizon, creating a breathtaking view of our planet from space.
The lunar module ascent stage, approximately 4 meters across, is brilliantly detailed against the backdrop of the lunar surface. Command module pilot Michael Collins took this picture just before docking at 21:34:00 UT (5:34 p.m. EDT) on July 21, 1969. The historical moment beautifully captures the spirit of exploration and the milestone of human space travel during the Apollo 11 mission.
