Przemysław Ząbczyk (zombi) is an automation engineer and IT leader whose award-winning astrophotography captures the cosmos' authentic colors and intricate details. He combines engineering precision with artistic vision, using specialized filters and processing methods to reveal cosmic structures while maintaining natural tonal balance.

His artwork has been featured, e.g., in Sky & Telescope, Astronomia, Urania, and astronomical calendars, with recognition including Astrobin's Top Pick awards and competition accolades.

Since capturing his first images in 2010, Ząbczyk has refined his craft through expeditions to pristine dark-sky locations and collaborations with fellow enthusiasts. A 2023 journey to the Southern Hemisphere allowed him to photograph iconic southern celestial objects, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Przemek also mentors emerging astrophotographers, sharing technical expertise honed through years of image analysis and field experience. His childhood fascination with the night sky – ignited by summer stargazing and a transformative meteor sighting – continues to drive his artistic exploration of the cosmos.

The California Nebula: A Masterpiece Sculpted by Starlight

"Space is not empty. It is a canvas of violent elegance."

Imagine a star so powerful, so brilliant, that its mere existence sculpts the cosmos around it. That is the story of the California Nebula. At Astrography, we don't just sell pictures of space; we curate moments where science and art collide. This print by Przemek Zabczyk is a testament to that philosophy—a visual journey into the Orion Spiral Arm, 1,800 light-years from home.

A Nebula Shaped by Cosmic Giants

NGC 1499 earns its name honestly. Spanning the constellation Perseus, its distinctive shape mirrors California's profile—a visual gift from the cosmos itself. But what makes this nebula truly exceptional is its architect: Menkib, a stellar paradox burning with 330,000 times the luminosity of our Sun, ionizing hydrogen into the deep crimson glow that defines this celestial masterpiece.

Yet Menkib holds a secret. Despite its magnificent power, it's young—only 7 million years old—and tragically doomed to end as a supernova within the next million years. In this brief cosmic moment, it creates. What you're witnessing is a star at its most generative—actively shaping its surroundings, revealing hidden dark dust clouds (including the striking LBN 748), and nurturing the invisible stellar nurseries where future stars quietly form.

The universe isn't a showcase of emptiness. It's a story of transformation, power, and creation. And this image captures it perfectly.

    Not All Astrophotography Is Equal

This print represents far more than a simple observation. It's the result of deliberate artistic and technical mastery. Captured during an exceptional astrophotography session in southeastern Poland under exceptionally clear skies, this image combines traditional LRGB broadband color information with specialized hydrogen-alpha narrowband data—a sophisticated technique that reveals details invisible to standard photography.

The optics matter too. A refined Takahashi FSQ 106 telescope paired with a monochromatic G3-16200EC sensor captured the initial frame. But the real magic happened in refinement.

A second phase—informed by deeper experience—unlocked the full tonal and color richness, revealing gradations and details that transformed a promising capture into a photographic achievement that honors both scientific accuracy and artistic vision.

Your print is faithful to the cosmos as it truly appears, yet elevated by technical mastery and interpretive skill.

This Print Belongs In Your Space If You:
